Last year, the Hawks dropped a close match to Speedway 2-3, leaving a lot to be desired and walking away with quite a bit of disappointment, but also an eagerness to come back stronger the next time.
This year, the Hawks knew there was something to prove, and came out stronger than they ever have against a team that has always proven elusive. And, in so doing, were able to walk away with a strong 4-1 victory over the Plugs at home.
All spots fought well and the results showed. At #1 singles, junior Charlie Tran split sets against Speedway’s Sar Moo, forcing a third set tiebreak to decide the match. And after a lot of back and forth, Tran was able to close out the match and take down Moo 6-4, 4-6, Tiebreak 10-6.
#2 singles senior Seth Fitzpatrick started off slow, allowing for some errors to bring out a 3-2 deficit against Speedway’s Sam Arle. However, that deficit would prove short lived, as Fitzpatrick came back strong to take the next 9 games in a row to close out the match with a smooth 6-3, 6-0 victory for the Hawks.
#3 singles junior Dakota Atwood came out strong and played some interesting angles to move his opponent up and down the court, walking away with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Speedway’s Austin Huddleston in straight sets.
#1 doubles senior duo Austin Hardin and Miles Webb had a long evening, fighting hard in a three set battle against Speedway’s Jack Thompson and Jacob Foxworthy. After dropping the first set 5-7 and down 0-3 in the second set, Hardin and Webb managed to rally back to take the second set 6-4, forcing a third set tiebreak to determine the match. Unfortunately, the two couldn’t capitalize and ended up dropping the third set, 7-10, giving Speedway the win.
#2 doubles duo senior Owen Wohlert and junior Nolan Spivey once again pulled through with interesting angles and aggressive corner shots to take down Speedway’s Ryan Pettigrew and Sam Doehrmann 6-0, 6-1.
JV also had a spectacular night, with all players walking away with a nice 5-0 sweep! Honorable mentions were our #1 doubles duo Nick Crider and freshman Jackson Tetrick and #3 doubles freshmen duo Flavio Mayorga and Jacob Starnes with 8-0 shutouts! Good job Hawks!
The Hawks tennis team is on the road tomorrow against Beech Grove at 5 PM. Go Hawks!
