In First Round Sectional action the Hawks squeaked past a very feisty Southport Cardinal Team. Prior to this contest the Hawks had lost twice to the Southport Cardinal. The Hawks started slowly, only scoring 4 points in the first quarter and trailing by the score of 9-4. They started to pick up the scoring in the 2nd quarter, but so did Southport. The Hawks went into the locker room trailing by 4 with the score being 22-18. In 3rd quarter the scoring continued its fast pace, both teams scored into the twenties but this time the Hawks had 4 more than the Cardinals. Those 3rd quarter points were mostly courtesy of Cadence Thomas. She had a ridiculous 3rd quarter helping to tied going into the 4th at 42. In the 4th the Hawks took over outscoring the Cardinals 21 to 8 in the quarter. That outburst ended the Cardinal and continued the Hawks season.

The game leading scorer was freshman Cadence Thomas. She finished the game with 20 points on 8/17 shooting. Her 3rd quarter was one for the ages. Every time Southport made a three, she would answer with a 3 pointer of her own. Other key contributors were seniors Vanessa Wilson and Kenzee Smith. Vanessa scored 17 points, 4 assist, and 3 rebounds. Kenzee Smith scored 10 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds.

In an interview with Coach Gibbs, he was asked what he though about the school and the teams first sectional win in years. Coach Gibbs said, “I could not be happier for this group, they have earned this success. I hope they are not satisfied. We have another game Friday against Pike.”

The Hawks continue the season Friday as they travel to Pike to play the Pike Red Devils at 6PM. There is a fan bus for anyone interested interested in going to the game. The package gets you a ticket to the game, pizza, and transportation for $10. Come root on your Lady Hawks!
