Saturday was a long day for the Lady Hawks tennis team as they hosted a three way conference match against Greenwood and Franklin Community at home.
Match one pitted Greenwood against Decatur Central, Decatur’s first conference match of the season. The girls had yet another lineup, with all of the girls finally cleared to play, so the dynamic was a bit more hopeful as the girls were able to find their way back into the norm.
#1 singles junior Alex Sumpter fell 0-6, 0-6 to Greenwood’s Sophia Davidson after fighting many long hard games. #2 singles junior Tori Heighton also fell to her opponent junior Emily Chatham of Greenwood 0-6, 0-6.
#1 doubles had new life, as junior Yennie Tran was able to return to the court. The duo of Taylor O’Dell and Tran (“Yaylor” for short) came swinging in a first set battle against junior Maecee Terhune and freshman Tori Graber, dropping a close first set 5-7. After a tough first drop however, Greenwood gained momentum and ended up taking the second set as well, 0-6. #2 doubles junior Samantha Schick and junior Isabelle Glenn came together for the frist time and developed good chemistry as a team, but fell short to Greenwood 2-6, 2-6.
At #3 singles, sophomore Izzy Ison brought another win for the Hawks, taking down junior Alexa Ashmore in a three set battle 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
JV also had quite an array of scores as well. Many young teams and new pairs were able to take some games and get some more valuable experience on court. Highlights included two tiebreak matches, with one match coming from junior Mackenzie Morris at #3 singles, winning her first match of the season 8-7 (tiebreak of 7-1).
