The Lady Hawks tennis team have been gaining steam more and more each match this season. After a rough start this season, the team has been adapting and working hard to prove that they are contenders. And after tonight, facing another conference rival as well as potential sectional opponent, they showed that they were, bringing home the team’s first 5-0 clean sweep of the season against Perry Meridian on the road at Perry Meridian.
The varsity ladies proved that consistency and footwork were key, as all five courts spent a lot of time on their toes and it showed in their shot making and ball placement in every point that was played.
First off the court was sophomore Izzy Ison at #3 singles, taking a clean 6-0, 6-0 victory over Perry’s Ni Tha Cin. Second off the court was junior Tori Heighton at #2 singles, bringing home a 6-4, 6-0 finish over sophomore Shae Gardner. Heighton had a slow start in the first set, but was able to adapt to digging into much deeper baseline shots and improved footwork to be more prepared for each shot, which really showed in the second set!
Third off the court was #2 doubles duo junior Samantha Schick and sophomore Lia Burton, who once again used their strengths to their advantage and continued rolling along with great team chemistry. After a strong first set 6-1 win, the duo had some setbacks that brought the match to a slight 5-4 lead, with the girls returning for a second set closeout, bringing down Perry’s Olivia Lighty and Cer Lian Mawi 6-1, 6-4, as well as clinching Decatur’s third point of the night for the varsity win.
But the fun didn’t stop there.
Shortly after, #1 doubles duo junior Yennie Tran and junior Taylor O’Dell rallied back from a slow first game in both sets with a lot of strong cross-court shots and good lobs to defeat Perry’s Andrea Alvarez and Katlin Hadley 6-3, 6-3. And last but not least was #1 singles junior Alex Sumpter. Sumpter spent a lot of time rallying long and hard against Perry’s Lauren Houk, and after a first set win 6-2, Houk decided to strike back with some interesting slices to change it up to bring her to a 5-4 lead after taking a long game with a dozen deuces, forcing Sumpter to regroup and serve to stay in the match, which she did. And shortly after she broke Houk’s serve to take back the lead 6-5. Finally, after a changeover and some wise words from coach Romily, Sumpter was able to steal the second set 7-5, bringing home the last win and the clean sweep for Decatur.
The JV fought long and hard, but unfortunately fell short to the Falcons 2-8. Highlights of the night bring 2 wins from freshmen combo Taryn Cook and Samantha Lopez. Honorable mentions come from the singles courts, with sophomore Nuria Koestner Gento and junior Isabelle Glenn taking many long games after many deuces! The serving game is improving greatly on the JV squad!
The Lady Hawks are now at 5-5 overall for the season, with another match on the road tomorrow night against Speedway at Speedway! Here’s to hoping for another win! Let’s go Hawks!
