Speedway High School
Decatur Central High School
After two cancellations, a night of lightning delays and freak rain storms, the Hawks were finally able to compete for the second time against the Speedway Sparkplugs at Decatur Central. For the first time, we were able to have a second chance in the same season against a team! And the boys were itching for a win, and from the beginning the fight was present.
However, after all the cancellations and delays, and a move to the next day, Speedway was once again able to drive away with the win over the Hawks. However, that being said, all matches were much more competitive, showing that we were able to learn some things about how to better approach a team that edged us before.
Senior AJ Wright started out of the gates strong, but was edged after many deuces against his opponent 0-6, 3-6. Freshman Charlie Tran rallied long and hard once again, but came up short 2-6, 2-6 with many unforced errors and angle shots going wide. Three singles junior Will Sommers fought hard the first set losing 4-6, but his opponent put many shots in the corners and forced Sommers’ hand in response, but ended dropping all second set games in the second set, finishing the night 4-6, 0-6.
Doubles was much more consistent. One doubles team Casey Martin and Austin Hardin moved up in the lineup, taking on a different pair than the last time but were unable to execute at the net against their opponents, losing 2-6, 2-6. The match of the night was two doubles senior Jalen Hennessy and sophomore Miles Webb. After dropping a quick first set 1-6, the boys were able to rally back and take a 6-3 win in the second, forcing a third set for a win. In the end, the boys fought well but ended up short, dropping the third set 3-6, giving Speedway the last win of the night.
We may be out of the county tournament, but our run is most certainly not over! We have Mid-State conference tournament away at Franklin Community High School this Thursday and Saturday before taking on senior night and sectionals next week!
