Decatur Central High School
The Hawks nearly surprised Pike tonight, but unfortunately came away with only a moral victory. Haley Card dropped her first set quickly 6-0, but rebounded and came back to win the second set 6-4. Coming back from such a large first set defeat is very difficult to do, but Haley didn’t give up, corrected her mistakes and took the match into a third set. She eventually lost 6-1.
Junior Sarah Lopez recorded her first win of the season as she showed consistancy and limiting errors were key, in her 7-5, 6-4 win. Sarah used her experience as an upperclassmen and remained calm and took care of business. The third highlight of the evening were freshmen Yennie Tran and Taylor O’Dell as they played the longest match of the evening going two and a half hours against the Red Devils. They couldn’t quite pull the win out as they fell 7-5, 7-5, but showed growth in their over all performance.
Playing JV tonight, freshman Tori Heighton won in both singles (8-1) and doubles (partner Victoria Ison 8-2). Senior Yozabeth Jimenez also won her first singles match of the season 8-2. The JV has begun the season strong and they have a lot of potential this season!
The Hawks now will enjoy two, much deserved practice days before returning on Monday against Plainfield.
